2005 Keynote Speakers

Dr. Ronald Mincy

Dr. MincyDr. Ronald Mincy received his Bachelors degree from Harvard and earned his Ph.D. from MIT. He is currently the Maurice V. Russell Professor of Social Policy and Social Work Practice at Columbia University and is a leading authority on the research of fragile families. Professor Mincy has formerly served at the Ford Foundation in their programmatic efforts and research targeting low-income fathers, as well as holding positions at the U.S. Department of Labor and the Urban Institute. He has been a contributor to the understanding of fragile families and low-income fathers for over two decades and is an author and contributor to numerous books and publications. His most recent book is entitled Black Males Left Behind.

 

Dr. Guadalupe Quintanilla

Dr. QuintanillaDr. Guadalupe Quintanilla is the President of the Cross-Cultural Communication Center of Houston and is Associate Professor in the Department of Hispanic and Classical Language at the University of Houston. In 1984, Dr. Quintanilla became the first Hispanic U.S. Representative to the United Nations and the first Hispanic to serve as an International Correspondent for the United Nations and as co-chair of the National Institute of Justice. She is an inductee into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame and has been included in the State of Texas Outstanding Women" traveling exhibition.

Dr. Quintanilla's primary interest is in helping students develop a love of learning. Her commitment to education has been heralded in books about her life and through a career in education advocacy. Recently, the DuPont Corporation honored her efforts in adult education by naming part of their national training center in Wilmington, Delaware, after her.

 

Andrew Levack

Andrew Levack began his career in public health 13 years ago as a sexuality educator in the United States. Since then, Mr. Levack has lived in Thailand and South Africa and has worked in more than 15 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. His work addresses adolescent reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence, and reproductive health counseling. Mr. Levack holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington and is the director of EngenderHealth’s Men As Partners® (MAP) Program. He is also the co-director of MenEngage, a global alliance of nongovernmental organizations working to engage men and boys in gender equality.

 

Dr. Myrna L. Armstrong (EdD, RN, FAAN)

Dr. ArmstrongDr. Myrna L. Armstrong (EdD, RN, FAAN) is a professor in the Health Sciences Center School of Nursing at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. She has been involved in a program of research with patient education examining various elements of body art since 1990. She is an authority on the emerging culture of tattoos and body piercing and their corresponding health effects. Dr. Armstrong and her colleagues have published numerous articles on all aspects of tattooing and body piercing, including tattoo removal.
